The Interview

TFAIWhat first got you into comedy?

Charlie Mac

Growing up, laughter was like a secret weapon in my house. Life would throw us curveballs like it was pitching for the major leagues, and while others might have been drowning in tears, I found out I could throw in a quick one-liner and flip the whole mood. I was like the family stand-up, turning tense family dinners into comedy nights. I think I realized I had a knack for comedy when even my cranky old uncle started cracking up. Soon enough, what was just fooling around with family and friends turned into me hitting stages across the country—and wouldn't you know it, now I'm flying over oceans. If you told ten-year-old me who was making fart jokes in the living room that someday I'd be performing comedy worldwide, I'd have laughed harder than anyone. But here we are, punching laughs in the face of life's misfortunes, one country at a time.

TFAIHow has your comedy evolved over the years?

Charlie Mac

When I first hopped on the comedy circuit, man, my only goal was to make folks crack up — like, belly laughs, tears streaming down their faces kind of thing. But as I bombed and soared on all those open mic nights, I realized just getting laughs wasn’t gonna cut it. Comedy’s like a relationship; you gotta make a connection. So, I started weaving in stories — tales from my misadventures, family reunions where Aunt Edna smuggled pies under her coat, and those eyebrow-raising moments on the subway. I discovered the magic of being real, hitting those nerves where people are like, “Yep, been there!” Now my comedy’s a spicy gumbo of personal highs and lows, what’s happening in the world, getting the crowd in on the action, and spinning yarns that hopefully stick with folks long after they leave. It’s all about giving them a slice of Charlie Mac they never knew they needed.

TFAITell us about your upcoming 2027 Global Tour? How did it come together? How can comedians get to this point?

Charlie Mac

The 2027 Global Tour is my biggest project yet. The goal is to perform on all seven continents and document the journey. It came together through years of networking, producing my own shows, building relationships internationally, and being willing to bet on myself. For comedians looking to get there, stop waiting for opportunities and start creating them. Build your audience, own your brand, and think globally.

Charlie Mac

TFAIYou have a book called The Comedy Clinic Workbook, what’s its purpose and why should people take a read?

Charlie Mac

The Comedy Clinic Workbook is the companion guide to the comedy clinic book. They were created to help comedians stop treating comedy like a hobby and start treating it like a business. I share practical strategies on marketing, branding, booking gigs, creating products, and building an audience so comedians can earn real income from their craft. Talent gets you laughs, but business knowledge helps you build a career.

Charlie Mac

TFAIWhat all do you partake in outside of comedy? We see you are also a radio personality @ KAZI 88.7 FM

Charlie Mac

Outside of comedy, my life's like a colorful carnival—there's never a dull moment! I'm an author diving into all kinds of stories and universe-creating adventures. Then there's The Charlie and Crash Show, my pride and joy on KAZI 88.7 FM here in Austin. Man, we get into some crazy discussions about entertainment, culture, and community—you'd be surprised what can erupt from two dudes chatting! I’m also a screenwriter and producer, breathing life into new projects like some kind of creative mad scientist. And if that’s not enough, I’m an entrepreneur too, hustling to get my ideas out there into the big wide world. Whether I’m writing books or cooking up live events, I’m always plotting the next big thing—who knows, maybe the next ticketed circus show!

TFAIWhat do you do to prepare before going on stage?

Charlie Mac

Alright, so before I hit the stage, it's all about getting quiet and finding my zone. It's like I have to tune out the world and channel some inner comedic zen. I'll grab my set list and go over it like it's the roadmap to the best party ever. In my mind, I'm already in that room, feeling the vibe, picturing every table, every seat. I remind myself of my mission: to make folks laugh so hard they snort. But here's the kicker: once those stage lights hit me, all that prep? Whoosh! Out the window. That's when I gotta lean on my instincts, man. It's like diving into a crazy comedy ocean where the audience are the fish and I'm just swimming along with them. They tell me where the show needs to flow, and I'm just riding the waves.

Charlie Mac

TFAIWhat do people not know about you that would surprise them?

Charlie Mac

Most folks see me getting up on stage, cracking jokes, and think that's the whole package. But the reality is, behind the scenes, I've got a whole library of books with my name on them—tons, actually. It's like a literary clown car; they just keep coming! I'm always cooking up new projects, too, like a mad scientist in a comedy lab. Now, don't get me wrong—I love the comedy grind, but I'm also this secret goal ninja. I spend as much time diving into business strategies and personal development as I do perfecting punchlines. You could say I'm splitting my time between killing audiences and killing it with spreadsheets and self-help books. Who knew, right? It turns out, the funniest thing about me might just be the fact that I'm a total nerd for success.

TFAIGive us your funniest comedy story or moment

Charlie Mac

One of my funniest moments happened when I was performing and a heckler kept trying to interrupt me. Instead of arguing, I started interviewing him like he was applying for the position of “Professional Hater.” By the end of the conversation, the audience was laughing so hard that even the heckler was laughing at himself. Sometimes the best jokes aren’t planned.

TFAIEnjoyed our virtual chat, but before we let you go, when are you going to make an appearance on TFAI Comedy TV Series?? lol

Charlie Mac

Well, as soon as they send the invite, you know I'm there faster than a comedian at an open buffet! My schedule’s getting packed tighter than a clown car with this 2027 Global Tour—it’s gonna be a whirlwind of laughs, airports, and those tiny airplane peanuts. Still, if TFAI wants a dose of Charlie Mac's wild energy, they just need to reach for that phone—I've got my ringtone set to "Call Me Maybe" for a reason! Just picture it: a mic shimmering in the spotlight, an audience ready to bust a gut, and me up there spinning tales faster than a squirrel in a nut factory. Let's make it happen!
